Approach
Impact
The COVID pandemic has placed increased strain on the healthcare system and de-prioritised non-urgent interventions meaning patients are waiting longer for treatment or having to go private.
Lower limb pain can be debilitating and affect everyday activities meaning that individuals cannot undertake their daily life, affecting physical and mental wellbeing. Custom foot orthotics have been proven to improve posture, reduce pain and increase wellbeing. With long NHS waiting lists and expensive private treatments, these are not accessible to everyone who needs them.
Cynapse was been working with a 3D printing and additive manufacturing company and a Russell Group university to create an innovative, low-cost custom foot orthotic. The orthotic can be designed in clinics by podiatrists and orthotists using standard clinical approaches and 3D printed to meet the exact custom requirements using a novel approach to control footfall.

Commercialisation Plan
The low-cost custom foot orthotic provides value to patients, clinicians and the 3D printing industry by making them more accessible to everyone. The novel design incorporates cutting edge research meaning that performance is superior to its competitors. The end-to-end process means that clinicians can follow their existing processes and have a rapid low-cost orthotic for their patients that can be reproduced for use across different footwear rather than having to reuse the same expensive orthotic across different shoes.
